Forced child begging; is when child are forced to beg on the streets, by the parents or by the traffickers. In the article “Drugs are also used to keep children sedated” “It is common to see women pretending to be mother with a ‘sleeping’ child”. This tells that the child how is with them may or may not be their child as it might be a child who has been kidnapped and being used for trafficking. They are also chances of family’s renting their babies or children to beggers of whom they then get the money for renting the baby or the child.
In the article is also says that the people are offered government facilities and also right to educate but they force their children to beg. This mostly happen in poor community’s when the family is uneducated and has been through the same processs.
There are also some cases where some children’s are kidnapped ( form poor to rich backgrounds) and used for begging where the traffickers do things like cutting of limb, making blind and other scary steps to make them look poor and disabled so that the people feel sorry for them and give money.
the fusion of two designer and their contrasting styles:
Designer: Viktor and Rolf ‘ is a fashion house which is specialises in creating conceptual and avant-grade designs’. The Fall 2008 ready-to-wear collection has inspired me as the three dimensional word on the garments: ‘NO’ and ‘DREAMS’ have gave me ideas which I can relate to my project.
Rick Owens an American designer, with his spring 2019 ready-to- wear collection. The glossy leather material with triangular cut outs (the jacket and the garment) gives it a feel of broken, but the sharp cut out edges also showes anger and strength. Along with the hijab, the idea of concealing identity are the style that I am heading towards with my project.
The outcome which I produced was a fusion of two designers Viktor & Rolf and Rick Owens collection. using the words form my research: ‘Countries with high rate of human trafficking’ word that repeated through out the reach in each countries.
During the previous word sampling, I wanted to get a glimpse how its going to look when the words are cut out (taking off the excess outline fabric). So I cut out the excess fabric of the word outline and draped on to the stand.( the sample “NO” is the first sample which i created, inspired by viktor a Rolf).
as seen in the above image out come of the cutout wards is amazing as it makes the word more sharp and eye catching; On the other is was very difficult to cut some of the shapes as the gaps were two tight (as you will notice in some of the image). Not knowing what to do with the samples I drape them on to the stand and (as seen in the images above) realized that the only suitable place for this sample was the lower body (as did not like the samples when places on the upper body) which gave me an idea of skirt.
when compared this sample to the previous uncut same ; the previous sample would have been a covered padded skirt where as the cut word sample is see trough and could not be stitched closely, when finally for the final outcome I combined both of the designers contrasting styles together by using my own idea of hand sewing the words
together as if they are holding together. The idea of this sample Is to show the victims life after trafficking or during trafficking as the samples are holding on together means that the victims are holding on together and not giving up, they are fighting for their life’s.
It also shows that the memories of trafficking hold on to them forever, even after getting out of it.
concluding i think its a great sample which can be used as a over skirt; could have done better by adding few more words to reduce some of the gaps but thinking of it i think it would have been to clustered.
How mothers/ families take on extreme measures to protect their children’s specially daughters.
“Breast massaging aims tell even out different breats sizes and reduce the pain of nursing by massaging their breast with warm objects.Cameroonians now use the practice on girls who develop at a younger age for their alleged safety”.
My thoughts:
Breast Ironing or flattening is a painful and unbelievable process carried out by using hard or heated objects like sltones or metals: ‘ wooden pestle normally used for pounding tubers. Other tools used include leaves, bananas, coconut shells, grinding stones, ladles, spatulasand hammers heated over coals”. This is done to stop the developing and to disappear the breast.
This process is typically carried out by the victims mothers themselves, and the reason for them to do this is to protect their daughters from sexual harassment and rape; to prevent families name being vandalised by early pregnancy or to avoid early marriage so that they can be educated. As this process keeps the males away and the daughters/ women’s safe.
This also has a negative effect on the women’s health: damage of tissue, breastfeeding the child, depression, breast cancer and mental trauma. This also can have on impact on their appearance by making them lose confidence.
“It’s usually done in the UK, not abroad like female genital mutilation (FGM),” she said, describing a practice whereby mothers, aunties or grandmothers use a hot stone to massage across the breast repeatedly in order to “break the tissue” and slow its growth.”
“Sometimes they do it once a week, or once every two weeks, depending on how it comes back,”
“Breast ironing is child abuse and it is illegal,” she said. “No one should suffer because of who they are or which community they are born into.”
Susan Williams.
My thoughts:
It is very shocking to know that “ Breast ironing” is practiced in the UK. Although it’s a aferican cultural tradition practice which we may think of only being done in that part of the country; But no, it is prevalent in many parts of the UK and is not seen or no action is taken to stop and consider it as an illegal practice. Young girls aged 10 years old are breast ironed to cover puberty and form the eyes of males, to prevent them form being victims of sexual abuse etc.
Why do young girls and women’s have to go through the process, it’s not a protocol that is a priority, it’s not their fault; why do they have to suffer because of others bad action?
Criminals who run human trafficking should me executed ruther then giving them a Prsion sentence. As they are family’s taking major steps to protect the idea children form evil, all because the bad in the society that we live in.
Concluding, the government should consider breast ironing as illegal as it is a form of child abuse.
Viktor and Rolf: fall 2008 ready-to-wear collection.
The collection from viktor and Rolf , fall 2008 sparked an idea in my mind; the reason why got interested into the collection er the tree dimensional “NO” striking out some of the garments as this caught my attention as well as very useful recurring word in my project. “NO” is the first word that striked int our mind when we think of trafficking: “NO TO TRAFFICKING” “NO MEANS NO” or imagen how many times the victims desperately said NO: ” NO PLEASE STOP” “NO….help!!”
The three dimensional “NO”on the garment make encouraged me to fuse the word from the research: countries with high rate of trafficking to create three dimensional padded words.
Desigual: ‘ is a clothing brand headquartered in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain, which is notable for its trendy patchwork design, intense orients, graffiti art, asymmetrical designs and flamboyant splashes of colour’. On the study trip to Barcelona I uncovered this brand, as it was very colourful and had a cultural feel to it. As in the image about I like the denim tshirt with huge patchwork prints, which feels like it’s telling a story about some one or something
Some of the samples which I made based on brand desigual, using the patchwork style as they use in their design. The first image is the first sample which I tried and the sample was not a success as the the heat transfer did not work correctly. The second images are of second trial and they were a perfect success as the heat transfer transferred the images clearly, next what I have done is don stitching on the image as you see the tread light is embroidered and the on the other sample the hand outline embroidered. Finally the last and final sample is a mix of my idea as I have included a thread which I had created in my initial samples over the heat transfer to give a feel of isolation.
